Considering a Career Move During Uncertain Times

During the past four months I have spoken to many Accountants seeking advice on whether this is the right time to be on the job market. Obviously, there are lots of factors that you have to weigh up, but it is never a bad time to dip your toes into the water and to explore your options. I have summarised in a few succinct points why this is:

Working from home

Most people are currently working from home and this provides the ideal platform to make the job search more comfortable.

Whether you are liaising with a recruiter or an accounting firm, it is much easier to speak openly rather than sneaking out of the office to take a “personal call”.

Furthermore, if you secure an interview you have more flexibility and there’s no need to act like a racing driver to try and make it on time.

Tenure doesn’t equate to job security

In the past, long service would inevitably make you believe that you are secure in a role, and so it should. Brownie points should be given for loyalty. However, due to these unprecedented times, you may have seen first hand that high performers on high salaries are being made redundant, or hours are being cut. If there is an opportunity which ticks all your boxes, why not explore it?

The Accounting market is still very buoyant

Whilst the holistic employment market has seen a decrease since COVID-19, there is definitely still an abundance of Accounting roles out there for people who are looking to make the switch. You may never have the time, opportunity, and understanding available that we have today.

In summary, from my conversations with Accountants, one of the major reasons people don’t pursue a new job opportunity is their dislike of change, and more specifically, the ambiguity that comes with it. We have been forced to change in many aspects of our life and this may be a great time to move into a direction that you’ve always wanted to go. Yes, there will be some ambiguity, but that is rife in every workplace right now.
