How to Boost Your LinkedIn Profile

Face to face networking has taken a step back due to social distancing. Now is the best time to boost your individual online brand; and no better place to start than with your LinkedIn profile.

When looking for a job now or in the future, LinkedIn is the ideal platform to be noticed, so get your online presence in order and get started with the tips below:

1. Pick an appropriate profile picture
A profile picture is often your first impression online and how people visually connected with you. LinkedIn is a professional network so having pictures with pets, a skydiving photo, or laying on the beach will not be suitable. As a simple rule of thumb, view it as a professional headshot. Also make sure the picture is recent and looks like you.

2. Add a cover photo
Your cover photo is an additional visual element at the top of your profile page. There is no right or wrong way to use it, but most importantly, pick something that will help your page stand out, engage attention and be memorable.

3. Update the smaller details
Make sure the tagline underneath your name portrays you in the best light. Don’t just put “Accountant”; put “Senior Accountant at a mid tier firm” (if you are of course!). Also update your location: it may sound simple but if you are currently in Melbourne, but your profile still reflects your short stint in London, then you might be ignored by a Hiring Manager. They may be small tweaks, but they have a big impact so accuracy is key.

4. Put time into your summary
In short, this is the “CV” section of your page and should be treated in the same manner that you would treat your CV. From my recruiter standpoint, it’s incredible how many people still leave this field blank when creating their LinkedIn profile, or don’t update it, as it’s a big missed opportunity. I have seen Accounting firm Partners’ profiles who are still listed as a Senior Accountants on their summary. This is your personal piece of content marketing – and it’s worth the effort.

Why is it so important? When looking for a role and marked as “open to opportunities”, LinkedIn will notify potential Hiring Managers that you are exploring the market. If a job requirement is a Manager with 3 years’ experience, and you have not updated your job title or duties, then you may be overlooked for a dream role.

5. Grow your network
Growing your network with relevant connections is obviously very important and an easy way to do this is to get into the habit of following up meetings and conversations with a LinkedIn connection request. Adding a note also makes it more personalised. Additionally, build your network with friends, neighbours etc. Whilst you may not believe they are of immediate value for your industry, you never know the reach it can provide if they share or like your post.

6. List your relevant skills
It’s a very quick thing to do but add every skill that is relevant to you. It allows others to endorse you but also allows Hiring Managers to search for someone who has this required skill. If you are CA/CPA/IPA qualified, make sure this is listed on your profile.

7. Ask for recommendations
Recommendations are basically a condensed online reference. If you did a piece of fantastic work for a client, don’t be afraid to reach out with a polite message asking for a recommendation. It goes without saying but make sure the recommendation provides value and is professional. If you are going for a job and the employer can see you have got good feedback for a previous role, it will inevitably bode well.

8. Create/share relevant and engaging content for your LinkedIn feed
It’s one thing to have a network of connections on LinkedIn but if you don’t have any activity it limits your value. If you don’t provide thoughts or add value to your network whilst on LinkedIn, people may not be aware of your insightful market knowledge.

Making your LinkedIn profile work harder for you doesn’t have to be time consuming. Set aside a few minutes over a lunch break or in the evening that would usually be for commuting and reap the rewards. Happy editing!
