Are you about to have a salary review?  Have you just had a salary review and been disappointed?  Remember that salary is not the only reason people remain working with their employers.  There are other ways a company can demonstrate that they recognise your contribution, some of which have monetary value and some which do not.

Here are some things outside your annual salary figure that you could potentially negotiate on:

Recognition of your career pathway within the business

  • An additional task or responsibility within your role if that is important to you
  • Consider asking for a dedicated senior mentor within the business, or externally, to discuss your career development with
  • Put timelines and regular reviews in place for anticipated career progression

Training and professional development opportunities

  • Payment or partial reimbursement of further education relating to your role
  • Attending training, whether internal within your company or externally run, which benefits the company e.g. emergency first aid training, an IT/systems course etc.
  • Attendance at an industry related event
  • Additional study leave before an exam
  • Professional membership subscription

Annual leave

  • Ability to purchase additional annual leave
  • Extra leave to use for voluntary/community initiatives or activities
  • Loyalty leave based on time employed with the company

Flexible working arrangements

  • An additional day working from home
  • Being able to leave work early one day to attend an extracurricular activity like an exercise class, or sports training
  • Compressed working week or a nine day fortnight

Opportunity for an earlier salary review

  • If salary reviews generally take place annually consider asking for review at an earlier date if the company was unable to increase your salary as anticipated at this time

Wellbeing initiatives

  • Optional company paid Flu vaccination
  • Allowances to use for gym membership, exercise equipment, health insurance etc
  • Access to employee assistance programs for example confidential counseling services
  • Wellbeing leave days
  • Upgraded work amenities for example a standing desk

Other benefits

  • Assistance with commute costs for example a toll pass/ETag
  • Allowance to assist with your home office set up if you are required to work from home
  • A review of your job title if it more accurately reflects your current role

Remember when it comes to salary, your employer will have constraints and that your Manager will always have a salary budget that they need to work within. Also, be very mindful that your job satisfaction inevitably comes from many things other than salary. Look at the bigger picture.
