Skills You’re Learning whilst Accounting in Adversity

In the space of five weeks (or even less) our Australian Accounting community has adapted and begun to work remotely. Any change tends to have it’s teething problems, but when it has been done at the speed and scale of the past weeks, we are surprised, and delighted that we have collectively been able to do it so this well.

Below are a number of ways that Accountants can benefit during this period:

  • Enhance your career in your existing firm by showing you can handle pressure and can literally work in a crisis.
  • Embrace the change, and when some form of normality resumes, you can show that you’ve been able to perform at home as well as at the office and encourage your firm towards a flexible working culture.
  • Think like the Owner and listen to the needs of your Partners. The key to working remotely is communication; make all interactions easy and effective whilst you navigate this together. Team spirit goes a long way whilst so far apart.
  • Consulting and advising is often a career path Accountants seek. Consultancy skills are similar to those we use to digest the barrage of information we take on about COVID-19 in this digital age. Fine tuning these skills will benefit you both personally and professionally.

You’re learning, adapting and growing. You’re honing the ability to work in adversity and providing solutions to problems. This is something that will stand you in good stead.

We are all experiencing the distractions of working from home. You’ve got the lure of the fridge, which won’t process a tax return unfortunately, you’ve gone from PSI to PS4, and you will be working from home on your own, with Partners, children, housemates and even pets – a keyboard and mouse might take on a whole new meaning for some.

At Lawson Delaney it’s our responsibility to understand the market in real time. As the largest business services team in Australia, we provide sound advice and we are here to help, chat, listen at your convenience.
