State of the Market – Noise Cancellation

Stage 4 has kicked in and Accounting firms have been forced to shut. Although this can be a scary headline, it’s important to decipher between the facts and fiction.

It is true that the Big 4 have made hundreds of people redundant and have found themselves in the difficult situation where decisions have been made due to circumstance rather than competence. Other firms have also been hit, although we have seen that some high quality, robust boutiques, with diverse clients, appear to be the best equipped for this time. Tight debtors, smaller overheads, and highly effective, adaptive staff have meant some boutiques are going from strength to strength during this tumultuous time.

With the market awash with job seekers, there are misconceptions on both sides. Accounting firms believe there is an abundance of talent – they can land a quality hire without the need for a recruitment expert, and get a “cheap deal” and hire Accountants for less than they’re worth. On the other side, candidates are either sacrificing career progression due to desperation and the opportunity to join a firm who aligns to their values and strengths.

The reality is, the Accounting recruitment landscape has changed less than people perceive. Top talent is still difficult to find (in some cases even more so due to the volume of job seekers from all sectors) and the best Accountants won’t compromise on salary, flexibility and quality of firm – and neither should firms. There are of course instances where compromise is necessary but don’t do this due to fear of the current economic state.

Partnering with an expert recruiter has never been more important. Removing the need to navigate a COVID-19 skewed landscape, where self interests may supersede best interests, allows both Accounting firms and job seekers to focus on quality and sustain long-term growth.

Lawson Delaney is focused on adding value by harnessing our strong relationships across the market to tailor a service that suits both parties. Contact us today on 03 9946 7300 or support@lawsondelaney.com.au
